Senior Connection Funding
This article is being
published to clear up some of the misconceptions regarding Senior Connection
funding for 2007. Regardless of
what you might have heard, the budget for the Senior Connection is still
$2500.00, and has not been cut for 2007.
Beginning in 2006, without my knowledge or approval, unfortunately an ex
board member approved dispersing the entire $2500.00 budget to the Senior
connection in the beginning of the year. The
money was placed in a separate bank account under the name Sierra View Senior
Connection, using the Sierra View Tax ID number.
This account was a non-interest bearing account, due to legal
requirements. Essentially this took
$2500.00 out of the General fund which could have been earning interest for all
of our other expenses, repairs, etc. and placed it into a non interest bearing
account.
This money was then dispersed by a Senior Connection bookkeeper, and
receipts for the entire year were not provided to the office, until the end of
the fiscal year. My responsibility
as SVA Treasurer requires me to be aware of how all SVA money is being spent. For myself, and the association administrator to have no
knowledge of how the money is being spent until the end of the year, is an
unacceptable practice, and a breach of our responsibility to all of our members.
The finances will now be handled the same for the Senior Connection as we
do with all of our other groups. This
will not change how any members of the Senior Connection pay for any expenses.
If money is needed in advance for a deposit, or purchase, the office will
supply you with a check for that expense. The
only difference is that the office administrator will write the check.
I regret that this was allowed to happen in the past, but I am committed
to working with the Senior Connection to make this change transparent to all of
their members.
If the Senior Connection is involved in any fund raising activities, we
will offer the use of the clubhouse, or grounds based upon availability, to
support any of these functions. Any money that is made as part of the fundraiser
will be set aside for their own use. Again, this is the same procedure that we
use for our other groups.
I fully support the Senior Connection, and I truly
believe that it is one of the best organizations that we offer for the members
of Sierra View. I commend the
volunteers who run the group, and think that they do an excellent job. This is
strictly a procedural change, so that we can apply proper accounting practices
for all of Sierra Views funded organizations.
I will always continue to support the funding of the Senior Connection,
and I also look forward to becoming a member of the group when I become
eligible.
Sincerely,
John
