Deer Removal

As we get into the heart of deer accident season, here are some facts and tips to keep in mind:

v  The odds of hitting a deer with your vehicle in Pennsylvania are 1 in 63.

v  For comparison, the odds of being a twin in North America are 1 in 90, and your odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are 1 in approximately 292,000,000.

Insurance companies offer these tips to avoid animals in the road:

v  Stay alert. Pay attention to deer-crossing signs and be cautious in areas near woods or water.

v  Use high beams. Flicking your high beams on a deer in the road may cause the animal to scurry away. High beams also help illuminate dark roads.

v  Don't swerve. If a deer-car crash is unavoidable, maintain control of your vehicle and don't veer off the road.

v  Brake as necessary. If you can avoid hitting the animal, reduce your speed, honk your horn and tap your brakes to warn other drivers. If there are no drivers behind you, brake hard.

v  Remember peak season. Deer crashes happen most during October through December, which is hunting and mating season. Collisions are most likely to happen in West Virginia, Montana and Pennsylvania and Iowa.

v  Remember peak activity times. Watch for animals in the road between dusk and dawn.

v  Watch for herds. If you see one deer, there are probably more nearby.

v  Forget those whistles. No scientific evidence supports that car-mounted deer whistles work.

v  Wear seat belts. And always obey speed limits.
